First of all, I wish you all have a nice holiday season! The followings are some news I would like to share with you.
1. HBMU delegates had a good time with our alumni during their visit to the US. After went home, they had send me a fax to thank all of our alumni for their hospitality and friendship, special thanks to Drs. Baisong Mei, Yang Lin, Ren Ke, Kang Xiaoqiang, Tian Ganghong, Ye Shuiqing, Ho Wenzhe, Xu Yan, Zhang Jiazhu, Zheng Jianping, and Sherman Liu. We had discussed briefly a special issue to organize an oversea alumni term to visit Hubei Medical University sometime this year or year 1999.
2. Dr. Tian Ganghong at Institute for Biodiagnostics, National Research Council of Canada has been recently awarded by the Medical Research Council of Canada for $ 62,000.00/year for a three-year period with a five-year graduate student voucher ($ 15,000.00/year). The grant proposal was entitled "Retrograde Cardioplegia: A Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy Study".
3. Dr. Hu Jianming, Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Boston University School of Medicine, published a paper in EMBO J. The paper title is "Hepadnavirus assembly and reverse transcription require a multi-component chaperone complex which is incorporated into nucleocapsids". EMBO J 1997 16(1):59-68.
4. Dr. Kang Xiaoqiang at National Cancer Institute has been offered a new position at Imclone Incorporation, New Jersey and he is going to take this position in coming February, 1998.
5. People's Daily (Overseas edition) published an article about Dr. Zhang Youren, Professor of Anatomy of HBMU, in Sept. 23, 1997 The title of the article was "fashion of a female professor".
6. Professor Chen Zhenguang, an orthopaedic surgeon at 2nd Teaching Hospital, received 1997 award (Third Class) from China National Commission for Natural Sciences and Scientific Inventions. This was the first time ever in HBMU history for HBMU faculty's achievement being recognized by such commission..
7. Mrs. Li Changyi, Dr. Tu Jiancheng's lovely wife, won first place among women's group in a Karaoke competition at Washington metropolitan area.
