From: "Zheng, Zhi-Ming (Thomas) (NCI)" (zhengt@dce41.nci.nih.gov) Subject: HBMUOAA news Date: Mon, 19 Oct 1998 18:25:38 -0400Hi, everyone,
How are you doing? Time is flying and the summer 1998 was over already. I wish each one of you and your family had a good vacation. The followings are some news or notes I would like to share with you.
1. Dr. Sun Lihua, the Vice President of Hubei Medical University, had sent me a fax regarding to organize a home-going team to give a series of talks for one or two weeks at HMU. HMU will pay each speaker's expenses while you are in Wuhan. The Education office at Chinese Embassy in DC might have some kind of fund available to cover one way ticket to or from China. If anyone of you is interested in such home-going in January or June 1999 and is willing to organize such team, you should contact me or Dr. Sun directly by fax 86-27-8730-7966.
2. The first term of HBMUOOA officials is ending on the last day of December 1998. Dr. Ren Ke will be on duty as our new President for next term. Here, I would like to call everyone's attention for nomination of following new posts:
3. There was a rumor that HMU might merge with Wuhan University. The officials of HBMUOAA favor such merge and would like to ask your support. If you share the same opinion with us, we will appreciate your signature on following page and then we will fax our alumni's signature to HMU.
4.Dr. Meng Xiang-Jin, Senior Staff Fellow at Laboratory of Infectious Diseases, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health, have officially accepted the position as a Tenure-track Assistant Professor of Molecular Virology at the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology, Center for Molecular Medicine and Infectious Diseases, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech). He will start the new position on March 1, 1999. Congratulations!

I just have one word to say about that rumor. What I heard during my HBMU visit this July was that HBMU likes to merge with Wuhan Univ, Wuhan Univ intends to merge with Tonji Med Univ, but Tonji Med Univ wants to merge with Tonji Univ (based in Shanghai).
Believing or not, there was another kind of rumor, like Hubei Univ would like to merge with HUMU. Most of HUMU people thought that is a bad idea(, and they'd rather die than marry that ugly boy). It is a very complicated situation.

From: "Tian, Hong" (Hong.Tian@nrc.ca) Date: Wed, 21 Oct 1998 11:05:00 -0400Dear Dr. Zheng:
It's a fantastic idea for our Medical University to join this nationwide well-known University (Wuhan University). First of all, this is going to be mutual benefit. Secondly, I believe that combining the two Universities will promote basic science programs and basic medical science education for medical students and undergraduate students, respectively, which may be a very crucial element for becoming a nationwide top-level University. Moreover, it is expected that the mergence of the two Universities may significantly improve basic and clinical medical researches and has many other positive impacts on various aspects, which may be difficult to be predicted at the present time. One thing for sure is that this is going to be a win-win situation and I give my two hundred percent support to this idea. I would like to take this opportunity to express my great appreciation in advance to those who have and will put tremendous efforts making this idea a reality.
